Community-Based Health Professions Training Opportunities

During the eight years of federal core funding, the Wisconsin AHEC centers assisted the state 's health professions programs in developing community-based clinical training opportunities. Many of these programs have now become an integral part of the curriculum, funded by AHEC 's academic partners with AHEC providing more limited support services.

AHEC 's program partners include the state 's residency training programs in Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine and Pediatrics; the UW Medical School; UW School of Pharmacy; Marquette Dental School; Physician Assistant programs at UW-Madison, Marquette University and UW- LaCrosse/Gundersen/Mayo;t he Nurse Midwife program at Marquette University; other Nurse Practitioner programs at Marquette and UW-Eau Claire, UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Oshkosh and Concordia University; undergraduate Nursing programs at these six schools,as well as UW-Green Bay and Alverno College, Carroll-Columbia College, Edgewood College, Marian College, Marquette University, Concordia University, Viterbo College and the Milwaukee School of Engineering; Physical Therapy programs at Marquette University, UW-Madison and UW-LaCrosse; Social Work pro- grams at UW-LaCrosse, UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee; and Allied Health programs at UW-LaCrosse. In addition, Wisconsin AHEC 's regional offices maintain partnerships with the technical schools and other health professions training programs in their regions. Although the Medical College of Wisconsin no longer has a formal partnership with the Wisconsin AHEC System to devel- op community-based training sites for medical students, Wisconsin AHEC 's regional and statewide programs, including the Wisconsin Express program, are open to medical students at MCW.

Approximately 40 percent of the required training in patient care settings for UW Medical School students now takes place in community-based sites throughout the state. Our other partner programs have also dramatically expanded their community-based training opportunities in the last few years. AHEC continues to fund curriculum innovations and expansion of program- ming to new sites, particularly where there are opportunities for developing interdisciplinary experiences. An outline of the opportunities available at all our partner schools will be featured on AHEC 's website in the near future.
