LaCrosse – Mayo Family Medicine Residency

Mauston Rural Training Track
Core Program: LaCrosse-Mayo Family Medicine Residency

Community
Mauston is a beautiful recreational area. It is the county seat with a population of 3500. The area provides opportunities for bicycling enthusiasts that literally cannot be matched anywhere in the world. Both the State and the County have developed extensive bicycle trails that connect in Elroy, only 12 miles from Mauston. The Elroy-Sparta Trail was the first trail of its kind in the nation, being developed on an old railway bed. If camping is your hobby, the area has many wilderness surroundings to full service campgrounds. Bicycle and hiking trails convert to cross country ski and snowmobile trails in the winter. With 47,000 acres of inland waters, the area offers excellent fishing and water recreation opportunities. Nature lovers will enjoy the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge and Meadow Valley Wildlife Area, two of Wisconsin's premier birdwatching and hiking areas. For a faster pace, the Wisconsin Dells is only 20 minutes away. This very popular Wisconsin vacation destination has numerous resort hotels, rides, water slides, top-flight entertainment, fine dining, shops and other attractions.

Hospital
Hess Memorial Hospital, a community owned, non-profit facility, has been in operation for over 50 years. The current 40 bed hopsital was built in 1980 and remodeled in 1996. The hospital has approximately 1900 admissions and 6200 emergency room visits annually. There are over 200 obstetrical deliveries per year, all done by seven family practice physicians.

Clinic
Mile Bluff Clinic, founded in the early 1900's is the sole practice entity in the region, serving a population of 35-40,000. Together with the hospital, Mile Bluff Clinic has developed outreach clinics in the neighboring communities of Elroy, Necedah and New Lisbon. By design, the clinic offers ample space and attractive facilities for the residency program. There are six patient care areas, each with its own reception and waiting areas. Clinic staff includes 11 board-certified family physicians, eight physician assistants, two surgeons , two nurse practitioners and a podiatrist. Residents have the opportunity to interact and learn from consultants from a variety of medical specialties. The specialists are drawn from large multi-specialty clinics in LaCrosse, Madison and Marshfield, Wisconsin.

Curriculum Overview
RTT residents spend most of the first year on traditional inpatient rotations like obstetrics, surgery, pediatrics and internal medicine in LaCrosse with the other core program residents. They begin their continuity outpatient practice in Mauston two half-days per week. Residents may choose to live in LaCrosse for the first year and commute to Mauston or live in Mauston all three years. For the last two years, the resident becomes an active member of the Mile Bluff Clinic family practice group learning in an apprenticeship model. Curricular requirements are divided into block and longitudinal rotations planned parallel with the continuity outpatient practice. The resident rounds at the hospital before office hours, scrubs in on patient surgeries, deliveries, handles urgent care and learns practice management on-site. A few specialty rotations may be in LaCrosse during the last two years.
