Milwaukee AHEC
The Milwaukee AHEC service area includes four metropolitan (Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, and Waukesha) and one non-metropolitan Walworth) county in the southeast corner of the state, with a service area of 1,958 square miles and a total population of approximately 1.75 million (32% of the state’s population). The population breakdown for the city of Milwaukee, where the majority of Milwaukee AHEC’s services are concentrated, is 12% Latino, 45.4% White, 37.3% African American, 2.9% Asian and 1.4% other. Over 20% of the residents are below the poverty level, and the city has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the nation. The area also has an increasing number of new immigrants from Russia and Eastern Europe with limited English proficiency. There are five Community Health Centers operating 11 delivery sites in the region serving the homeless and other vulnerable populations. The region also includes one new service delivery site in Racine to be operated by the Beloit CHC and one Critical Access Hospital (Lake Geneva.)
